'Though owners with flood-risk cover will be able to claim, those in areas of frequent floods whose properties are too costly to insure will not. Many homeowners in the south west would be made homeless and unable to claim on their house insurance if a tsunami struck. If a Canary Island tsunami hit Britain it would spell economic disaster, the destruction of London's Thames Barrier region and a dramatic fall in property prices, says Eddie McLaughlin, managing director of Marsh Risk Solutions, one of the world's leading risk management companies. 'Whether it's a wave of 2 metres or 20, its effects will be far greater in the summer, when people are visiting the resorts and playing on the beaches than in the winter, when trade is far less brisk.' 'We need a dedicated communications network in the south west, including air raid sirens on beaches and around major estuaries like Plymouth, educating residents and visitors about warning signals such as the sea drawing down for no apparent reason. We need to spend several more years monitoring the activities of volcanoes and volcanic eruption before we can set up a proper warning system.'ĭr Russell Wynn, head of tsunami research at Southampton Oceanography Centre, has called for a combined tsunami alert system by police, port authorities and regional bodies. But it's not like that and a few hours' warning is utterly inadequate. 'Many people think the way to cope is to run as fast as possible in the opposite direction. 'Tsunamis are unpredictable,' says Dr Day. ![]() One of the major hazards of a tsunami hitting Britain is the lack of an early warning system. A 20- to 40-metre-high wave would cause severe damage and considerable loss of life in the coastal ports.' Scientist Dr Simon Day, one of a UK team that has recently studied volcanic activity in La Palma, the fifth largest of the Canary Islands, says: 'There is real instability here and a large landslide that crashes into the ocean would create a tsunami reaching the UK's south-west region in four to five hours. The waves would not only destroy the surrounding Canary islands, but also devastate the south coast of Britain and the eastern coast of the USA. Scientists have warned for some time that an eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma could send a vast chunk of rock plummeting into the North Atlantic, resulting in tsunamis more than a hundred feet high. ![]()
